AMERICAN HEART WALK -- The 18th annual American Heart Walk will take place Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Modesto Junior College East Campus. The event promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living. Volunteers are needed the day before from 2 to 8 p.m. to provide major setup support and the day of the event between 6 a.m. to noon to assist with setup and tear-down, help register participants, staff rest stops with refreshments on course and help with children's activities and face painting. Individuals and groups are also invited to collect donations and join the walk. All participants are treated to a continental breakfast, lunch, prizes/giveaways, and enjoy live entertainment, and family fun.
CENTER FOR HUMAN SERVICES -- The 23rd annual Edible Extravaganza will be held on Sept. 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Modesto Centre Plaza. Volunteers 21 and older are needed to clear tables of plates, glassware and utensils, clean up spills, etc. Volunteer shifts of two hours are available between 5 and 9 p.m.
CERES PARTNERSHIP FOR HEALTHY CHILDREN -- The 12th annual Family Resource Fun Fest will be held Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Whitmore Park in Ceres. This free event for all ages is packed with fun games, activities, prizes, food, family resources, and community information. Volunteers 13 and up are needed to assist with setup and cleanup, decorations, balloons, refreshment stands, games, bounce house, face painting, and more. Flexible shifts are available between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
STANISLAUS PRIDE CENTER -- The fourth annual Stanislaus PRIDE Day will be held Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Graceada Park in Modesto. The theme of this free outdoor community pride celebration is "Right to Love" and will feature live music, entertainment, food, family activities and fun for thousands of attendees. Volunteers 16 and older are needed to assist with setup, refreshment booths, children's activities (bounce houses, games, etc.) and cleanup. Flexible volunteer shifts of two to four hours are available between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. The Stanislaus PRIDE Center was founded in 2005 to provide informational, educational and cultural resources in a safe and positive environment to support, strengthen and celebrate the lives of GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender) people in the greater Modesto area.
TUOLUMNE RIVER TRUST -- American Rivers National River Cleanup and Great Sierra River Cleanup, a National Day of Service and Remembrance will be held Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon beginning at Legion Park in Modesto. The theme, "Teaming up for the Tuolumne," invites volunteers to canoe the river and walk along the Tuolumne River Regional Park in Modesto to remove trash and debris to make it clean and safe for both wildlife and the community. Volunteers are asked to bring a reusable water bottle and a snack lunch. The trust will provide water, trash bags, plastic gloves and snacks for all volunteers.
PARENT RESOURCE CENTER -- Volunteers are needed to train to become labor and delivery coaches, mentors to teen and young adult parents or co-facilitators at parenting groups. Labor and delivery volunteers provide in-home and in-hospital support to pregnant teens and young women including prenatal and parenting education classes and nursing assessments; parent mentors provide emotional and educational support to at-risk young mothers; and co-facilitators assist parents during weekly group meetings. A volunteer orientation and 11-week training course is scheduled Monday evenings Sept. 14 through Nov. 23 from 6 to 8. Volunteers 14 and up are also needed to participate in fun, interactive activities, arts and crafts, coloring, water play, assist small children with motor-skills development, read aloud, and serve snacks while parents attend classes and parenting groups in Modesto.
READINGWORKS ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM -- Volunteers 16 and older spend just two to three hours per week increasing an adult's basic reading skills utilizing a phonics-based curriculum. A volunteer orientation will be held Sep. 9 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a tutor training on Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Modesto Library.
STANISLAUS COUNTY BEHAVIORAL HEALTH -- Help families succeed at the Family Partnership Center. Volunteer homework tutors are needed in the After School Program to help youth, ages 3 to 17, with basic academic skills in English, math, social studies and science tailored to meet the individual needs and age of each student. Flexible scheduling is available Tuesday through Thursday between 3 and 5:30 p.m. Interested individuals should be at least 16.
