AMERICAN HEART WALK — The 18th annual American Heart Walk will take place Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Modesto Junior College East Campus. The event promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living in a fun family environment. Volunteers are needed the day before from 2 to 8 p.m. to provide major setup support and the day of the event between

6 a.m. and noon to assist with setup and tear-down, help register participants, staff rest stops with refreshments on course, and help with children's activities and face painting. Individuals and groups are also invited to collect donations and join the walk. All participants are treated to a continental breakfast, lunch, prizes/giveaways and entertainment.

CENTER FOR HUMAN SERVICES — The 23rd annual Edible Extravaganza food and beverage show will be Sept. 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Modesto Centre Plaza. This event features tastings of the region's finest restaurants, caterers, bakers, confectioners, vintners and growers, plus entertainment. Volunteers 21 and older are needed to clear tables of plates, glassware, utensils, clean up spills, etc. Volunteer shifts of two hours each are available between 5 and 9 p.m. Tickets to attend are $40 presale or $50 at the door. All proceeds support the center's youth and family programs.

STANISLAUS PRIDE CENTER — The fourth annual Stanislaus PRIDE Day will be Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Graceada Park in Modesto. The theme of this free outdoor community pride celebration is "Right to Love" and will feature live music, entertainment, food, family activities and fun for thousands of attendees. Volunteers 16 and older are needed to assist with setup, refreshment booths, children's activities (bounce houses, games, etc.), and cleanup. Flexible volunteer shifts of two to four hours are available between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. The Stanislaus PRIDE Center was founded in 2005 to provide informational, educational and cultural resources in a safe and positive environment to support, strengthen and celebrate the lives of GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender) people in the greater Modesto area.

INTER-FAITH MINISTRIES — Food Pantry volunteers are needed to interview clients, offer support and referrals, bag grocery orders, and stock shelves weekdays. Last year, the agency provided 123,000 meals, formula, and baby food to low-income residents of Modesto, Ceres, Empire, Salida, and Waterford. Volunteers are also needed to sort clothing and assist in the community clothes closet and the Home and More Thrift Store. Volunteers must be at least 16.

PARENT RESOURCE CENTER — Volunteers are needed to train to become labor and delivery coaches, mentors to teen and young adult parents, and co-facilitators at parenting groups. Labor and delivery volunteers provide in-home and in-hospital support to pregnant teens and young women, including prenatal and parenting education classes and nursing assessments. Parent mentors provide emotional and educational support to at-risk young mothers. Co-facilitators assist parents during weekly group meetings. A volunteer orientation and 11-week training course is scheduled Mondays, Sept. 14-Nov. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. Volunteers 14 and up are also needed to participate in fun, interactive activities, arts and crafts, and to assist small children with motor skills development, read aloud, and serve snacks while parents attend classes and parenting groups in Modesto.
