GROPER GOING TO PRISON: A man who tried to coax schoolgirls into his car and grabbed the buttocks of several young women as they walked near their schools or homes pleaded guilty to two felonies and was sentenced to five years, six months in prison. Pedro Renteria, 19, of Modesto was convicted of attempted kidnapping and committing a lewd and lascivious act with a minor on March 12 in Stanislaus County Superior Court. He must serve 85 percent of his time, or more than 4½ years, before he will be eligible for parole. According to court records, Renteria made inappropriate overtures to seven women in south and west Modesto, including six minors and a 33-year-old, all from May 20 to June 4, 2007. In the most serious incident, Renteria told a 15-year-old he would shoot her unless she got into his car. Renteria was arrested after three women witnessed a groping incident near Tuolumne Boulevard and Colorado Avenue, then called 911 and followed the man as he fled. A prosecutor dropped a felony and four misdemeanor charges in exchange for Renteria's plea. Renteria was in the country illegally, so he faces deportation to Mexico after serving his time. He will have two strikes on his record if he returns to California.
