Blaze destroys vacant east Modesto home

July 17, 2014

A blaze destroyed a vacant duplex home in east Modesto Wednesday night, fire officials said.

The home in the 200 block of North Riverside Drive, north of Yosemite Boulevard and near Miller Avenue, had been burned by a fire before about a year ago, said Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Randy Anderson.

He said neighbors have reported transients going into and leaving the vacant home over the past two years. Fire investigators had not determined what started Wednesday’s fire or where it started.

The fire was reported about 9:15 p.m. The first firefighters to arrive found flames had engulfed the home.

Anderson said the firefighters took a defensive stance around the home and stopped the flames from reaching a nearby apartment complex and another duplex home.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, Anderson said. No injuries were reported.

The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.
