The Associated PressJuly 14, 2014

— San Diego police have shot and killed a man they say threatened his family, struck a police dog with a machete and swung the blade at an officer.

KGTV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1wnsvFj ) that the 21-year-old died at the scene Sunday night. His name hasn't been released.

Lt. Mike Hastings says officers called to a home around 10:30 p.m. tried to subdue the man with stun guns and dogs.

He says the man was shot after he struck a police dog on the back with the machete and then swung at an officer.

Investigators are trying to determine what prompted the attack.

The dog, an 8-year-old German shepherd named Nando, had staples to close the wound. Hastings says the dog has been with the department since 2008 and is retiring this month.
