Lazy days of summer? Not for teens these days

Orlando SentinelJuly 14, 2014

Do you remember summer vacation when you were a teen?

For me, it was hanging out with friends, going to the beach, and, yes, complaining about being bored. What I DON'T remember is homework. Lots and lots of homework.

But that's the reality for my son, who will be a high school senior. He has to read at least four books, write multiple reports/research papers, outline sections of another book and complete vocabulary index cards.

As a parent, I understand the need to keep kids' brains engaged over the summer.

But I admit I do feel a bit sorry for my son, who has been grousing about the work - but, it must be noted, hasn't actually started any of it!

Looks like the second half of his summer will be very busy.
