GOVERNOR DROPS IN ON MOTHER LODE FAIR

Gov. Jerry Brown paid a surprise visit to the Mother Lode Fair in Sonora, taking in the livestock and other areas. Brown was staying in Twain Harte and decided to drop by the fair, which ended its four-day run Sunday, interim General Manager Forrest White said. The governor technically is in charge of county fairs in California but delegates the job to the Department of Food and Agriculture. Brown, a Democrat, made sure to stop by his party’s fair booth.

FORUM FEATURES STATE LEGISLATURE HOPEFULS

A Wednesday evening forum in Turlock will involve candidates in the 12th Senate District and 10th Assembly District. Republican incumbent Anthony Cannella faces Democrat Shawn Bagley in the Nov. 4 election for the Senate seat. Republican incumbent Kristin Olsen is running against Democrat Harinder Grewal for Assembly. The forum will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 130 of the Mary Stuart Rogers Educational Services Gateway Building at California State University, Stanislaus. It is sponsored by the League of California Cities and the League of Women Voters.

RIPON LIBRARY HAS SUMMER ACTIVITIES

The Ripon Branch Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Fizz Boom Read,” will be at 2 p.m. Tuesdays through July. This week brings Teen Movie Day, with free popcorn and other refreshments. July 22 will feature crafts involving the Periodic Table of the Elements. The series will conclude July 29 with a lesson on using a night light to create starry lights in a room, along with pizza. The library is at 333 W. Main St.
