Sydney Elness: Two ways to view holidays

July 12, 2014

In response to Claudia Newcorn’s column, “We’re losing sight of the meaning of the word ‘holiday’ ” (Opinions, July 9), I find myself with mixed emotions. As an American, I am proud to say my country was built on hard work. But I also agree we may work too hard, and too often. Holidays are celebrated differently by everyone, and it’s true that not everybody feels the need to appreciate days like Presidents Day or even Valentine’s Day due to different beliefs. But as the daughter of a cop and nurse, I understand not all professions get a break. People can still appreciate the holiday while working an extra shift. Besides, businesses that are open during the holidays can be used at our leisure. If they don’t get enough business, they might rethink their strategy.
