Negotiators calm distressed man in Modesto home

July 12, 2014

Modesto police called in two hostage negotiators to deal with a man who had barricaded himself inside a home.

The report of a family disturbance in the 1500 block of Clovewood Avenue turned out to be a 36-year-old man feeling distressed, said Sgt. Steven Stanfield. Police blocked off Keller Street after the 9:30 a.m. call.

“We talked to him on the phone for two hours,” Stanfield said. The man emerged around noon and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Police did not identify the Modesto resident or say why he was taken to the hospital, other than to say it was for evaluation. Stanfield said the man would be released after being evaluated. The man was not charged, he said.
