Success & Service: Endowment giving $80,000 to kids programs in 2014

Bee Staff ReportsJuly 12, 2014

The Make Dreams Real Endowment, founded by Carl and Carole Boyett of Modesto’s Boyett Petroleum, will award $80,000 to various children’s programs in Stanislaus County this year.

Already this year, the endowment’s advisory board has awarded $44,000 to the Society for Disabilities’ adapted bike camp; Salida Unified and Stanislaus and Empire union school districts; and Cardozo Middle School to send students to Foothill Horizons outdoor education camp east of Sonora; and Girl Scouts Heart of Central California for its outreach program.

The board intends to award $36,000 more, and has extended the grant application deadline to Sept. 15. The 5-year-old endowment is funded in part through an online auction and a golf tournament each spring. Go to http://makedreamsrealgolf.com/sale for more information.

Store efforts benefit food banks

Grocery Outlet stores in Modesto, Manteca, Sonora and Oakdale are among those raising money and food for area food banks. Last year’s effort marked the third year of the campaign, which has raised more than $800,000 to date. This year, officials expect to surpass $1 million in total contributions.

The Modesto stores will benefit Fresh Start Ministries and the Modesto Gospel Mission. The Oakdale store is partnered with Community Sharing, while Sonora’s is paired with Interfaith Community Social Services. Manteca’s store is collecting for Second Harvest Food Bank.
