Man injured, big rig totaled in fiery crash near Los Banos

July 11, 2014

— A Hollister man suffered major injuries and a big rig was consumed by flames in a crash north of Los Banos early Wednesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Daniel Scott Campos, 22, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix south on Highway 165 near Santa Fe Grade when the car crossed into the other lane and sideswiped a northbound 2003 Freightliner driven by Kanwer Waraich, 36, of Ceres.

The crash occurred just south of the Los Banos Waterfowl Management Area. The accident was reported at 12:35 a.m.

After sideswiping Waraich’s big rig, the Grand Prix spun out of control and was hit by a northbound 2009 Freightliner driven by Santiago Sandoval, 56, of Modesto.

Sandoval’s big rig went off the roadway, hit a telephone pole and then caught fire.

Campos suffered major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Waraich and Sandoval were not injured.

It’s not clear why Campos’ vehicle crossed over into the northbound lane, according to the CHP. The investigation into the crash continues.
