Modesto Nuts fall to hot-hitting Stockton Ports

July 9, 2014

Modesto Nuts left-hander Ryan Carpenter allowed just four hits and struck out eight in five innings of work against the Stockton Ports on Wednesday, but he also surrendered five walks and four earned runs in a 5-3 loss at Banner Island Ballpark. After yielding a solo blast in the first to Colin Walsh, Carpenter threw up zeroes in the second and third innings and the Nuts tied it in the fourth when Michael Tauchman doubled in Rosell Herrera. But in the bottom of the fourth, after retiring the first two batters, Carpenter walked the next three and then surrendered a bases-clearing double to Matt Olson, making it 4-1. Modesto cut the deficit to one on run-scoring doubles by Herrera and and Will Swanner, but the Ports got an insurance run in the seventh when Olson hit his California League-leading 25th homer of the season off Tyler Gagnon. The Ports will go for a three-game sweep when the teams meet in their series final tonight at 7:05 p.m.
