Twelve people were arrested this week as part of a countywide operation targeting gang members.

Officers from the Modesto Police Department Street Gang Unit, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, Ceres Police Department, Stanislaus County Probation, California Department of Corrections and the Central Valley Gang Impact Task Force conducted 27 probation and parole compliance checks Tuesday on documented gang members in 22 locations.

The sweep was the fourth since June 10 but the first such large-scale operation.

Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves said smaller operations were conducted in Oakdale, Riverbank and Waterford over the past month. The personnel costs associated with the sweeps were covered with $35,000 in asset forfeiture funds from the Stanislaus Drug Enforcement Agency.

In all, 29 adults and four juveniles have been arrested during 89 searches.

Charges Tuesday included drug possession, identity theft and burglary.

“It’s important to conduct these searches to ensure gang members are in compliance with the terms of their probation,” Modesto police gang Sgt. Brandon Gillespie said in a press release. “We hope being proactive will prevent future crimes from occurring.”
