Nuts can’t hold ninth-inning lead, fall to Ports

Bee Sports StaffJuly 8, 2014

The Stockton Ports scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4, come-from-behind victory over the Modesto Nuts on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.

Jaycob Brugman, who had homered earlier in the game, delivered a one-out, bases-loaded single off Bruce Kern that produced the tying and go-ahead runs.

The Nuts wasted a solid effort by starter Matt Flemer, who pitched seven strong innings, giving up two earned runs while scattering six hits, walking one and fanning eight. Flemer gave way to Alving Mejias, who gave up a home run to the first hitter he faced – Brugman – and left it to Jon Keck to get out of the eighth.

Kern took over to start the ninth and fanned the first batter he faced. But after Bobby Crocker singled and Ryan Gorton doubled, Kern intentionally walked Daniel Robertson to load the bases for Brugman.

Offensively, the Nuts got off to a strong start when Michael Tauchman and Will Swanner hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the first inning.
