High Desert defeats Modesto Nuts to close series

Bee staff reportsJune 29, 2014

The Modesto Nuts managed just four hits off High Desert starting pitcher Scott DeCecco on Sunday in a 6-1 California League loss.

DeCecco (4-7) struck out three and walked one in seven innings, doing his part to close the four-game series in Adelanto.

Will Swanner’s footwork in the fourth inning helped the Nuts (27-54 overall, 4-7 second half) avoid a shutout. Swanner reached on a throwing error and stole second. He scored on Dean Espy’s two-out single to center.

Swanner also walked in the first inning and hit a double in the sixth for the Nuts’ lone extra-base hit.

Modesto starter Devin Burke (5-5) was tagged for six runs and nine hits in four innings. His ERA climbed to 6.24. Tyler Marlette hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to cap the Mavericks’ scoring and end Burke’s outing.

The Nuts’ bullpen stopped High Desert (41-40 overall, 7-4) after that. Alving Mejias gave up one hit and one walk in two innings. Jon Keck and Raul Fernandez each pitched a scoreless inning.

The Nuts play host to San Jose (39-42, 5-6) in a three-game series starting Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
