Local Digest: Modesto Nuts’ offensive outburts sticks in desert

June 27, 2014

Rosell Herrera went 4-for-6 with three doubles and Chris O’Dowd slugged a three-run homer Friday to lead the Modesto Nuts to a 14-7 victory over High Desert at Adelanto.

Modesto, stung by a walkoff loss to the Mavericks on Thursday night, responded with a season-high 14 runs, all during the first five innings. O’Dowd’s homer in the second put the Nuts in charge 6-0, a lead they expanded to 14-1 before High Desert countered late in the game. Herrera, the 21-year-old Modesto shortstop from the Dominican Republic, scored three runs and also turned in three defensive gems.

Center fielder Kyle Von Tungeln slammed into the wall for a catch in the sixth. Jordan Ribera drove in two runs in support of starter Matt Flemer (7-5), who struck out seven and allowed three earned runs in six innings. The four-game series continues tonight.
