Community holds Juneteenth celebration

June 20, 2014

The Juneteenth Community Celebration sponsored by the King-Kennedy Memorial Center and the Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department kicked off Friday night with a showcase of talent at the center.

The 45th annual observance will continue Saturday with a Celebration of Dads recognition ceremony from 10:30 a.m. to noon, immediately followed by an afternoon program of guest speakers, inspirational gospel singers, musical entertainment, cultural performances, educational exhibits, youth contests, a Black Business Expo, community resource information booths and children’s activities including bounce houses.

The free event is at the King-Kennedy center and Mellis Park, 601 S. Martin Luther King Drive. Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.
