June 18, 2014

A Hughson man was arrested in Ripon on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of chasing a young woman with a gun and attempting to rape her.

The woman was with a group of friends at a park along the Stanislaus River in south Ripon when the suspect allegedly accosted her. A 911 caller said the suspect approached the victim in the parking lot of the park and demanded sex.

According to Ripon police, he eventually retrieved a sawed-off shotgun from his vehicle and then chased the victim to a nearby neighborhood.

There the suspect allegedly physically assaulted the woman just before Officer Brett Delegado arrived on scene. He seized the firearm and apprehended the suspect, 34-year-old Jose Vasquez Sanchez.

Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape by force, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, sexual assault and a variety of other charges.
