After losing the first two games of a four-game set against Bakersfield, the Modesto Nuts gave themselves a chance to split the series with an 8-5 victory Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Modesto took a 3-0 lead in the first against Blaze starter Wandy Peralta, who settled down from there and allowed just two hits over his final five innings of work. But the Nuts jumped on relievers Ben Klimesh and Kyle McMyne, banging out six hits and five runs over the next two innings. Derek Jones swatted his eighth homer of the year of McMyne in the eighth. Patrick Valaika, Matt Wessinger, Dean Espy and Juan Ciriaco each collected two hits for Modesto. Shane Broyles picked up the win in relief of Matt Flemer and Ryan Gonzales got the final four outs to earn his fourth save of the season. The teams meet again tonight in Bakersfield at 7:45 p.m. to close out the first half of the California League season.

Among those leading the North are Manteca’s Alex Laurel and Billy Sharmoug.
