Boys ‘tie’ to win recliner

June 13, 2014

They were counting on ugliness, but cuteness made them winners. Tyler Wentworth, 8, and his brother Grant, 4, brought entries for the Ugly Tie Contest being held at the At Home furniture and decor store in Modesto on Friday. Mark Fenton, brother of At Home co-owner Pam O’Brien, is the Northern California representative for Ashley Furniture and happened to be in the store. His company came up with the Father’s Day-themed contest, so he took a photo of the boys and emailed it to corporate headquarters. It was such a hit among employees that the president of Ashley decided to award the boys a recliner for their dad – in addition to the one still to be awarded by the ugly tie that gets the most votes from shoppers and store employees. Ties still are being accepted – bring one in and get $50 off a recliner purchase – and voting continues through Sunday. The store is at Dale Road and Pelandale Avenue.
