The Modesto Nuts jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the fifth inning, but Bakersfield countered with four in the bottom the frame, one in the sixth, five in the seventh and two in the eighth en route to a 12-2 victory at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Juan Silva and Marquez Smith, who had three hits apiece in the Blaze’s 19-6 win over the Nuts on Wednesday, again collected three hits each on Thursday. One of Smith’s hits was his 15th home run of the season, putting him one behind California League leader Hunter Renfroe of Lake Elsinore. Modesto catcher Chris O’Dowd, who was in the lineup as the designated hitter Thursday, homered for the second consecutive game. Nuts starter Ben Alsup, who was 13-8 for Modesto last season, still is searching for his first win of the 2014 campaign after leaving the game with one out in the fifth. Alsup (0-7) yielded two earned runs on three hits and five walks.
HILMAR STAR WINS JUNIOR GOLF TITLE
Hilmar High senior Landon Azevedo took the lead on the 17th hole and held on for a 1-up win over Joshua McCarthy of Danville in the championship flight final of the Junior Golf Association of Northern California Match Play Championship. Azevedo qualified on Monday and then won five consecutive matches for the victory in the JGANC’s flagship event at Ripon’s Spring Creek Country Club. His was one of 11 age-group title matches Thursday in the climax of the four-day tournament. In the boys 10-11 flight, Oakdale’s Ryan Meyer was beaten by Caleb Barstad of Carmel Valley on the 10th hole. In the 7-9, Modesto’s Max Thomas defeated Ripon’s Trent Vink 1-up for the title. SUNRISE ROTARY CLASSIC SATURDAY
The 25th annual Modesto Sunrise Rotary Baseball Classic, which brings together the best high school juniors and seniors in Stanislaus County, will be played Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at John Thurman Field. A total of 44 players from 19 Stanislaus County high schools will comprise the rosters. Over the years, the event has raised more than $200,000, which goes to aid baseball programs throughout the county. Gates open at 5 p.m.
QUAKES SEEK WIN
The San Jose Earthquakes Under-23 PDL team seeks its second win of the season when it takes on the Southern California Seahorses on Saturday in Turlock. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Cal State Stanislaus’ Warrior Stadium. The Earthquakes earned their lone victory this season when they defeated Real Colorado last Friday. Luis Martinez (Chico State) leads the Earthquakes (1-4-2) with two goals.
