Info: In this workshop presentation, attendees can learn how to interrupt negative thinking and how to move from a negative thought to a positive thought. Info: Smart Talkers Toastmasters, Club 3494, invites area residents to its open house to meet members and watch keynote speaker Lisa Mazza of Grimbleby Coleman speak about the importance of utilizing technology to enhance communication skills for today’s professional. Along with the speaker, Toastmasters will hold a meeting that will include Table Topics (impromptu speeches) and evaluations. Light appetizers and beverages will be offered. What: TUOLUMNE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING

Info: The monthly meeting of the Tuolumne County Historical Society will feature author Mark Francis. The program, titled “So, You Want to Be a Historian,” will chronicle Francis’ evolution from an obligatory high school history student to a published author. The event is free and open to the public. What: TUNE IN AND TUNE UP CAR CLEANUP EVENT

When: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Merced County Spring Fairgrounds, 403 F St.

Info: The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District is offering free emissions tests on cars owned for at least six months. The first 525 drivers will receive free emissions tests. If your car doesn’t pass the test, you’ll receive a $500 voucher for smog repairs at a participating STAR certified smog shop. 40 YEARS AGO: The board of trustees for the Ceres Unified School District approved a preventive dental program, along with a breakfast program for the following school year. Preschoolers and other elementary schools in the district would have the preventive dental program and all schools, including the junior high and high school, would have the breakfast program.
