Woman killed in north Modesto crash

A 53-year-old Modesto woman died in a car crash in north Modesto early Thursday, police said.

According to Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves, the crash occurred at McHenry and Sylvan avenues at 12:49 a.m.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was driving a four-door 2000 Taurus south on McHenry. At the same time, a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was heading west on Sylvan approaching the intersection.

The driver of the Taurus ran the red light and her sedan hit the truck, then a second vehicle and several light and telephone poles, Graves said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Two male occupants of the pickup managed to crawl out of the truck. They suffered minor injuries, police said in a news release.

Police identified the driver of the Silverado as Tyler Johnson, 18, of Modesto.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision but said it does not appear drugs or alcohol were factors.

“Witness statements and physical evidence at the scene will be evaluated before any collision factor or cause will be determined,” police said in the release.

Authorities ask anyone who saw the crash or who has information about it to contact traffic Officer Scott Nelson at (209) 652-2160.
