A woman killed in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 99 on Friday has been identified as 24-year-old Alyssa Ashley Matthews, the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Matthews was walking along southbound Highway 99 north of the Sixth Street overcrossing in Modesto when she was struck and killed by a vehicle late Friday night, authorities said.

The driver of the car fled the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Based on evidence at the scene, the CHP reported, the car is described as small and gray with damage to the front bumper and headlamp assembly.

Deputy Coroner Tom Killian said Matthews was homeless but had family in Oakdale.
