Modesto

What: HOLY FAMILY FESTIVAL

When: Saturday, 3 to 10 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Holy Family Catholic Church, 4212 Dale Road

Info: Holy Family Catholic Church holds its second annual family festival. The event will feature a variety of music, singers, dancers, game booths and food. There will be a chicken dinner Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., with dine-in and takeout available; tickets are $10.

What: CIVIL WAR ASSOCIATION MEETING

When: Monday, 6 p.m. dinner, 7 p.m. meeting

Where: Coach’s Corner Restaurant, 950 Oakdale Road

Info: At the monthly meeting of the Stanislaus Civil War Association, guest speaker will be local historian Curtis R. Grant, whose topic will be: “Lincoln, Slavery and Race: A Review of Changing Historical Interpretations.” Dinner is optional.


Keyes

What: SUMMER READING KICKOFF

When: Monday, 1 p.m.

Where: Keyes Library, 4420 Maud Ave.

Info: All ages can come celebrate the start of summer reading with a kickoff party. Come for ice cream and listen to music performed by local ukulele band The Funstrummers. Attendees may pick up a summer reading log to earn prizes just by reading. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Keyes Library, (209) 664-8006.

Patterson

What: CANDIDATES FORUM

When: Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m.

Where: Hammon Senior Center, 1033 W. Las Palmas Ave.

Info: American Legion Post 168 will host a candidates forum. Among the attendees will be Michael Eggman (U.S. House District 10), Shawn Bagley (Senate District 12), Sheriff Adam Christianson (sheriff), deputy Tom Letras (sheriff), Frank Carson (district attorney) and District Attorney Birgit Fladager (district dttorney). The format will be question-and-answer, with candidates making brief statements first. Members of the audience will need to submit their questions to the moderator, and forms will be provided. Sonora

What: PLANT, RUMMAGE AND BAKE SALE

When: Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Open Air Market, Mono Village Center, 14961 Mono Way

Info: The Tuolumne County Garden Club is holding its annual plant, rummage and bake sale. It includes veggies, flowering plants, small household items, furniture, books and an accessories boutique. The proceeds support two scholarships awarded every year to promising students in Tuolumne County. For information, call Liana, (209) 586-0275.


YESTERYEARS

40 YEARS AGO: Baseball player Bob Starling of Atwater was named the “Outstanding Athlete of the Year” at California State College, Stanislaus. Starling was the leading hitter on the Cal State Warrior club, which finished its first winning season at 24-22, including victories over UC Berkeley, the University of Oregon and Fresno State.
