Nuts end with play at plate in loss

May 25, 2014

Modesto’s Matt Wessinger, representing the tying run, was thrown out at home plate for the final out of the game as Stockton beat the Nuts 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Wessinger singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Francisco Sosa followed with a double. However, Stockton right fielder Dusty Robinson fired it home and catcher Dusty Robinson applied the tag. Modesto starter Ryan Carpenter pitched 52/3 innings, allowing three runs while striking out five against no walks. Wessinger, Sosa and Sean Dwyer each had two hits and Derek Jones homered for Modesto, which concludes its four-game series against Stockton today at 1:05 p.m. at John Thurman Field.
