Modesto woman charged in Social Security benefits theft

May 22, 2014

A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Modesto woman on charges of stealing Social Security benefits.

Dorothy Brown, also known as Dorothy Hickey, 62, is accused of misrepresenting her eligibility for benefits to the Social Security Administration and concealing material information from the SSA, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

According to the indictment, Brown failed to disclose her savings in multiple bank accounts and the true cost of her living expenses. She also concealed her true living situation. As a result, and over the course of nearly four years, Brown received approximately $36,000 in benefits to which she was otherwise not entitled, prosecutors say.

If convicted, Brown faces up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000.
