Nuts cruise to third win in a row

May 21, 2014

The Modesto Nuts are showing signs of life. They erupted for 10 runs during the first two innings Wednesday night and, anchored by two home runs from Will Swanner, to drop Visalia 11-2 in front of 1,289 at Thurman Field. It was Modesto’s largest margin of victory thus far and matched its three-game winning streak late last month. Swanner’s three-run homer to right-center spiced the Nuts’ four-run first and he added a solo shot in the eighth. Modesto (14-33) pulled away with six runs in the second, thanks to a two-run single by newcomer Patrick Valaika and a two-run triple by Derek Jones. Ryan Kulik (1-0) made his his Nuts debut by striking out six and allowing two earned runs in seven innings. The Nuts picked up 11 of their 14 hits during the opening innings. They’ll pursue their first series sweep tonight at 7:05.
