NUTS SALVAGE SPLIT
AT LAKE ELSINORE
The Modesto Nuts (12-33) have controlled few games from start to finish this season, but they quickly took charge Monday night to defeat Lake Elsinore 4-0 and split the four-game series at The Diamond. It was the Nuts’ first shutout win this season. David Kandilas singled and Chris O’Dowd doubled to open the game, and both dashed home on Trevor Story’s groundout and Sean Dwyer’s single. O’Dowd capped the night with his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the ninth. Matt Wessinger also singled home a run for Modesto, which out-hit the Storm 11-6. Starter Matt Flemer (4-4) pitched seven shutout innings, struck out two and allowed only four hits. Relievers Jacob Newberry and Raul Fernandez finished the combined shutout. Modesto returns to Thurman Field to begin a seven-game homestand tonight at 7:05 against Visalia.
NINTH TOM MOORE
MEET THIS WEEKEND
About 700 young athletes are expected to take part in the ninth annual Tom Moore Youth Classic Track and Field Meet on Saturday and Sunday at Turlock High School. The Central Valley Roadrunners again are the hosts for the growing meet. The event honors the memory of the late Tom Moore, the former world record-holder in what’s known today as the 110-meter hurdles and was the lifeblood of the Modesto Relays. Kids from 5 to 18 from all local schools are encouraged to take part. The fee is $4 per event, and kids can enter by calling (209) 765-9840.
