Start of busy prep week sees Turlock trying to keep baseball title hopes alive

Bee staff reportsMay 18, 2014

The Turlock High School baseball team continues its run tonight to end a Stanislaus District championship drought.

To do so, however, the Bulldogs will face one of the best. Turlock plays St. Mary’s at 7 p.m. in the third round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament at the University of the Pacific.

It’s among a handful of playoff events that kick off another busy week for high school athletes.

In softball, Gregori and Merced remain alive in Division I and face afternoon games today at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

In golf, the Central Catholic team and Johansen’s Daniel Pena compete this morning in the NCGA/CIF NorCal Boys Golf Championships at Sierra View Country Club in Roseville. The top three teams and top nine individuals not on those teams will advance to the state championship in San Gabriel on June 4.

The goal of Turlock (22-5) is to beat a St. Mary’s team (16-12) that has represented the south in the section championship series each of the last five years.

Buhach Colony in 2008 was the last Stanislaus District team to represent the south in the final series against a Sacramento-area north team. The last Stanislaus District team to win the overall title was Merced in 2002.

A victory by Turlock would send it to the winners’ bracket final Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the winner of today’s Tracy-Tokay game. A loss would drop the Bulldogs into the losers’ bracket on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the Tracy-Tokay loser.

In softball today, Gregori plays Roseville in a win-or-go-home game at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m, Merced faces Rocklin with a victory sending the Bears to the winners’ bracket final Tuesday at 5 p.m. A loss would match Merced against the Gregori-Roseville winner today at 7 p.m.

In other action this week, the Sierra and Manteca baseball teams vie for Division IV titles, and track and field starts Tuesday with the Division IV-V meet qualifying at Cal State Stanislaus. The finals are Thursday.

Modesto Metro and Central California Conference athletes begin their run for section titles with the Division I meet qualifying Wednesday at Elk Grove High School. The finals are Friday.

All track and field athletes this week are competing for spots in the section Masters Championship on May 29-30 at Elk Grove. The state meet is June 6-7 in Clovis.
