NUTS LOOK FOR SPLIT IN LAKE ELSINORE

Lake Elsinore scored two runs in the sixth inning, and its bullpen did the rest, as the Storm on Sunday handed the visiting Modesto Nuts their 11th loss in 12 games 4-2. With the score tied at 2, Jeremy Rodriguez singled in a run before Modesto reliever Jon Keck walked in a run. Storm relievers Adam Climber and Cody Hebner limited the Nuts to three singles the rest of the way. Trevor Story, Jordan Ribera and Juan Ciriaco each had two hits for Modesto, and Sean Dwyer and Dean Espy each drove in a run. The teams play tonight at 6:05 before the Nuts return to start a seven-game homestand against Visalia and Stockton.

MANTECA’S SPEED IN GRC WINNER’S CIRCLE

Manteca native Scott Speed won the season opener of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship series in Barbados. The former Formula 1 and NASCAR driver now suits up for the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team. At the Bushy Park circuit, Speed took advantage of a 10-second penalty incurred by rookie Joni Wiman in the final round. Rallycross drivers race on a figure-8 track made of a variety of surfaces featuring turns and a large jump. The next event for the hybrid racing league is June 7 at the XGames in Austin, Texas. The 10-event season stops in Los Angeles on Sept. 20 and concludes in Las Vegas on Nov. 5.
