Police release name of man shot to death in west Modesto

Bee Staff ReportsMay 15, 2014

Police on Thursday released the name of a man who was killed early Wednesday when gunmen fired shots at several people inside the open garage of a west Modesto home.

Luciano Garnica, 24, of Modesto suffered fatal injuries at the home in the 800 block of Crippen Avenue, near Robertson Road Elementary School, according to Modesto police Sgt. Ivan Valencia.

Garnica was found injured in the garage. Officers and medics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Garnica before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

A 29-year-old man also wounded by gunfire at the Crippen Avenue home remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon, listed in critical condition, Valencia said. A 20-year-old man suffered injuries in the shooting that were not life-threatening. To ensure their safety, police have not released their names.

Detectives believe the shooting was gang-related. No suspects have been identified. Investigators have a limited description of the gunmen, who appeared to be two men in their 20s wearing white or gray shirts.

Several men and women were drinking in the home’s open garage when the gunmen walked up and began shooting into it. Valencia said it appeared the gunmen sneaked up on the group and opened fire.

Garnica’s family has established a fund online to raise money to pay for his funeral arrangements. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/973hb0.
