Central Catholic, Ripon Christian girls advance to soccer finals

Bee Staff ReportsMay 14, 2014

The Central Catholic High girls soccer team has been a model of success over the years.

Since 2008, the Raiders have either reached the Sac-Joaquin Secction semifinal or title game.

Unfortunately for Central, each season has ended in heartache with one-goal or penalty-kick defeats five of those six seasons.

On Saturday, the Raiders will take another shot at the title after a resounding 12-1 victory over Venture Academy in the Sac-Joaquin Section Divison 5 semifinal on Wednesday.

Central (15-2-1) will meet West Campus of Sacramento on Saturday at 10 a.m at Lincoln High School of Stockton.

West Campus (15-2) beat Escalon 4-2 in Wednesday’s other semfinal.

In other divisions:

• Manteca, a No. 3 seed in Division 3, advanced to Saturday’s title game with a 4-1 victory over Cosumnes Oaks. The Buffaloes will face Christian Brothers at Cosumnes Oaks High School at noon.

• East Union, the top seed in Division 4, advanced with a 3-2 victory over Liberty Ranch. The Lancers will face No. 2-seed Vista del Lago at Lincoln of Stockton at 2 p.m.

• In Division 6, Amador beat Hughson 2-0 to reach the final, where it will meet Capital Christian, a 3-0 winner over Bret Harte. That game will be played at Cosumnes Oaks at 10 a.m.

• In Division 7, it will be a meeting of the top two teams when No. 1 Millennium of Tracy takes on No. 2 Ripon Christian at Lincoln of Stockton at noon. Millennium beat Forest Lake Christian 1-0 in the semfinal while RC upended Holt Academy 4-1.

The area’s top swimmers will converge at Lodi’s Tokay High today for the start of the three-day Sac-Joaquin Section swimming championships.

The girls qualifying trials will start today at 10 a.m. followed by the boys on Friday at the same time. The finals are Saturday at 10 a.m.

All eyes will be on Golden Valley’s Connor Hoppe, who is trying to break a national record in the 100 breaststroke.

However, there are a few other Stanislaus District swimmers who will vie for medals.

Among those seeded in the Top 8 are Gregori’s Katelin Britton, who is ranked seventh in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 200 free. Also among the Top 8 is Ripon’s Zach Scudder, ranked fourth in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 200 free.
