Amy Hussar: VA has had time to improve

After reading your editorial of May 8 (“Obama must clean house, fix VA’s issues), I can’t help but draw a parallel between Eric Shinseki’s time as VA secretary and his time as Army chief of staff. I was stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 2001-02 and saw firsthand many of the conditions that came to light a few years later. Here we are a decade later, and I’m hearing similar stories about the VA. Why is that?

I have been fortunate to have gotten very good care from the VA where civilian providers have failed, but I know many people who have not. I was very lucky to have gotten my claims handled in a timely manner, but I have worked with people who have been waiting upward of two years for their claims to be even looked at. I have often wondered why there is such a disparity.

As a Legionnaire, I agree with our national commander in calling for resignations. The president can start by bringing in people who have actually worked with veterans firsthand, not bureaucrats.
