The sale of geology specimens Thursday at The State Theatre will be paired with an archaeological adventure film to raise scholarship funds for an MJC summer travel course.

Pieces of dinosaur bone, fossils, petrified wood, crystals and mineral specimens will be for sale in a silent auction starting at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7:30 by a showing of the 1981 classic “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” starring Harrison Ford. The film was produced by Modesto native George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg. Tickets will be available at the door for $10.

The fundraiser is being put on by the geology and anthropology clubs of Modesto Junior College.

“We are raising funds to assist our majors in attending our summer field studies course, a nearly two-week-long journey through British Columbia, Alberta and the Pacific Northwest,” said MJC geology instructor Garry Hayes. The trip, planned for July 21-31, will be a collaboration between the MJC geology and anthropology departments.

“We run a tandem course, traveling together and doing some learning across the two disciplines,” Hayes said. Students will tour the Burgess Shale fossil quarry, walk on glaciers in Banff National Park and get a behind-the-scenes tour of the paleontology lab at the Royal Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum in Drumheller, Alberta.

“Come out for a great time, and come home with a treasure of your own,” Hayes said.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling Hayes at (209) 575-6294 or instructor Susan Kerr at (209) 575-6107 to guarantee a seat.
