Allen Mitterling: Benghazi not a real issue

May 10, 2014

Last week, Republicans created a committee to, once again, renew their witch hunt over the Benghazi attack. This effort is not for the purpose of learning how better to protect our embassies and consulates around the world but rather an attempt to find any dirt on Hillary Clinton, who they fear will be the Democratic candidate for president in 2016. Already there have been several hearings on Benghazi, and it was raised as an issue in the 2012 election by Mitt Romney, who lost. Now there is another investigation.

I suggest one more. Congress should haul George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz before it and grill the hell out of them about their misrepresentations regarding Iraq that led to that stupid war and the loss of over 4,000 American lives – let alone all the young soldiers who were terribly wounded. Though four dead Americans are four too many, the consequences of the war in Iraq are far more serious than anything the Republicans hope to learn from this latest stunt on Benghazi. Perhaps they are looking for an issue since the economy is getting better and the Affordable Care Act is being implemented.
