Gary Ervin: Settlement math was faulty

May 10, 2014

Regarding “Legal settlements cost county $12.4 million” (Page A1, May 4): As a taxpayer, $12.4 million in legal settlements got my attention in a negative manner.

However, closer reading indicates the largest settlement of $8.25 million was covered by insurance, except for $250,000. The cumulative property tax administration fees of $2,538,680 came back to the respective cities, resulting in zero net effect to the taxpayers. Taking these two items into account, and assuming no other offsets to the remaining settlements, the net cost to taxpayers is $1,886,868.

That is still more than loose change, but doesn’t get my attention like $12.4 million.
