Local Digest: Ceres High tennis trio stopped in D2 finals

— Ceres High tennis players Nolan McCaig, Julio Ochoa and Chase Harden nearly walked away with Sac-Joaquin Section Division 2 championships Friday at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club.

They didn’t, but it speaks to the talent level at Ceres High that it qualified a singles player and double team reached the championship match.

The second-seeded McCaig, a freshman, was beaten in the final 6-0, 6-1 by No. 1 Sean Alves of Casa Roble (Orangevale). McCaig reached the final by handling No. 3 Scott Putty of Bella Vista (Fair Oaks) in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Alves advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-0 over Cody Duong of Florin (Sacramento).

The No. 2 tandem of Ochoa and Harden, both juniors, were vanquished 6-1, 6-2 by the top-seeded duo of Jack Lonergan and Kady Silva of Rio Americano (Sacramento). Ochoa and Harden beat Johann Montecillo and Marshall Comia of Oakmont (Roseville) 6-2, 6-4. The eventual champions swept aside Bella Vista’s Cody Blanford and Jovan Gojkovich to reach the final.

The Bulldogs host Oakmont (Roseville) on Monday at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the team tournament.

NorCal Finals – Modesto Junior College’s Becky Hobby in the 1,500, Cara McClain in the hammer throw and Victoria Dickerson in the discus will defend their respective titles at the Northern California Finals today at Cupertino’s De Anza College. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. The top six in field events and races longer than 800 meters, along with the top four in lane races plus the relays (plus the fastest fifth from either region) advance to the State Championships at Walnut on May 16-17.
