Local Digest: Nuts lose to San Jose, split four-game series (5-8-14)

May 8, 2014

Modesto Nuts pitchers allowed only four hits but two of them were lethal in Thursday night’s 4-1 loss to the San Jose Giants at Municipal Stadium. Brian Ragira’s 2-run double in the fourth off starter Matt Flemer (3-3) and Blake Miller’s 2-run double in the eighth off reliever Rayan Gonzalez – both with two out – set up the Giants’ split of the four-game series. Meanwhile, Modesto went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and scored its only run in the sixth when Sean Dwyer raced home on a wild pitch. The Nuts return to Thurman Field tonight to begin a three-game weekend series against the Stockton Ports.

Cal State Stanislaus junior catcher Marcus Mastrobuoni was named to the All-California Collegiate Athletic Association first team by a vote of the conference’s head coaches on Thursday. Skippy Ferreria and Colton Beatty also made the second team to represent Cal State Stanislaus. Mastrobuoni won the CCAA’s regular season batting title with a .373 average. He led the Warriors with 30 runs batted in after 45 games played and 43 starts behind the plate. Ferreria finished second in the CCAA with a .371 average. The Warriors’ leadoff batter led the conference with 72 hits. Beatty was an honorable mention selection in 2011 as a sophomore. In 2014, Beatty batted .335 with 60 hits, eight doubles and 20 RBIs. He also led the team with 16 walks.
