Students at Beard Elementary School participated in a tournament Wednesday of mostly T-ball and some dodge ball. The tourney, part of the schools Adaptive Physical Education program, included students in special education and general education classes, as well as regular classes.
Adaptive P.E. teacher Joyce Moe has been teaching students individual skills with these classes for the past month and the tournament offered them a chance to put the skills together. The special ed students were included with the regular ed students as models and occasionally helped them with tasks that were physically difficult.
The program also provides socialization opportunities for the special ed students, especially the severely disabled students who have those goals in their individualized education programs. The regular ed students benefited by learning to be accepting and encouraging to students with disabilities.
