Major injuries reported in single-car accident

— A 21-year-old Angels Camp man suffered major injuries when his car hit a tree near New Melones Lake in Tuolumne County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday.

Joseph Ryan Azevedo was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Carbio south on Highway 49 south of Jackass Hill at about 45 mph. As he rounded a left-hand curve, Azevedo lost control and the car went off the road.

The Volkswagen hit a tree and a barbed-wire fence. Azevedo suffered major head trauma.

At the time of the accident, the road was wet and slick from recent rainfall, the CHP said.
