Big rig fire spreads to grass, closes I-5

May 6, 2014

UPDATE, 7:30 a.m.: One lane of Interstate 5 has reopened, with officials estimating the second lane will not open until after 2 p.m.

Interstate 5 northbound is closed at Fink Road due to a big rig fire that spread to nearby grass, authorities said.

According to the Central Valley Traffic Management Center, the fire was reported at 5 a.m. A tractor-trailer, reportedly carrying appliances, caught fire and became fully engulfed.

The fire spread to nearby grass, prompting the closure of the highway. Traffic is being removed at Fink and then returned to the highway.

No injuries were reported, but a hazardous materials team may be called to the site due to a fuel leak, authorities said.

As of 6:15 a.m., there is no estimated time of reopening, though the California Highway Patrol reports one lane could reopen by 6:45 a.m.
