Steven Nascimento: At least our representatives get it

May 5, 2014

I have a great deal of respect for those who are working to make our state and communities safer and healthier. However, there are some, like Cole Wheeler and Kate Gordon of The Next Generation, who just don’t get it. Sen. Cannella and Assemblywoman Olsen were doing the jobs we elected them to do when they warned their constituents of a proposed double-digit gas tax increase in their op-ed. While Next Generation may be upset that Cannella and Olsen drew different conclusions from their research, the fact is that gas taxes are extremely regressive and will disproportionately impact Central Valley residents who have long commutes and no means to purchase new fuel-efficient vehicles.

Luckily, we have two legislators who get it. They understand the economic realities of our region and the impact additional gas taxes would have on communities still recovering from the great recession and plagued by drought. I commend the senator and assemblywoman for bringing our attention to this “hidden tax,” and I hope that they continue their work to keep it from going into effect.
