NUTS RALLY IN EIGHTH BUT LOSE TO BLAZE
An impressive rally wasn’t enough for the Nuts to avoid a sweep. Modesto lost 10-9 to the Bakersfield Blaze at John Thurman Field on Sunday despite scoring five runs in the eighth inning to tie the game at 9-9. Nuts reliever Bruce Kern dropped to 0-1 on the season after allowing a two-out RBI single to Marquez Smith. The run completed a three-game sweep for Bakersfield. The Nuts chipped away in the eighth, scoring runs on a Matt Wessinger sacrifice fly, a double by Juan Ciriaco, an error and an infield single by Sean Dwyer. The Blaze’s Carlos Gonzalez blew a save opportunity but earned the victory by pitching a clean ninth. Dean Espy homered for Modesto. The Nuts head to San Jose for a four-game set which begins today. All games in the series will start at 7 p.m.
