Ceremony honors student-run school safety patrols in Modesto

— About 1,000 students paraded across the John Thurman Field grass Sunday, in recognition of how they have helped schoolmates safely through crosswalks since August.

The Modesto Police Department honored the upper-grade elementary school students, whose work gets an assist from the American Automobile Association.

It was the 43rd year for the Safety Patrol Parade and Review. The well-trained, no-nonsense patrol members keep watch for traffic outside campuses at the start and end of each day, letting no one cross until cars are fully stopped.

Sunday, before the Modesto Nuts game, they walked with a banner for each school, some in the safety vests they wear on the corners. High-performing patrol members received awards from the organizers.
