Giants place Cain on DL

Atlanta, GA ( - The San Francisco Giants placed pitcher Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, retroactive to April 24, with a cut on his right index finger.

Cain was scratched from his last start on April 29 after cutting his finger on a kitchen knife while making a sandwich for a pregame snack. The right-hander was expected to avoid a DL stint and make his next scheduled start on Monday, but after a bullpen session Friday, the team decided a trip to the DL was necessary.

Cain, a three-time All-Star, went 0-3 with a 4.35 earned run average over five starts this season.

Jake Dunning will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno to take Cain's roster spot.

Dunning, 25, went 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA over eight games, including one start, with Fresno this season.

Yusmeiro Petit, who got the spot start in place of Cain on April 29, is expected to start again Monday when the Giants open a three-game set against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
