William Thomas Jensen: We can’t afford Dave Lopez as Stanislaus supervisor

May 3, 2014

The signs say “Dave and Us.” Dave Lopez will not be getting this family’s support to be District 4 supervisor. His biggest supporter is Mike Zagaris, who tries to control politics in Stanislaus County at the taxpayers’ expense. His next biggest support comes from the public safety unions. The police and firemen’s unions spent over $170,000 to try to raise our sales tax 1 percentage point. They will most certainly give Dave big bucks. Stanislaus County deputies took the same 6 percent reduction in pay as all other county employees as a result of the recession. Modesto police refused to take pay reductions and then tried to get even more by funding the failed Measure X.

Dave wants to give the deputies a raise. Can we really afford this? Modesto is teetering on bankruptcy while spending around 60 percent of the general fund on public safety employees. Dave’s stepson Josh Vanderveen spoke at every MID meeting in favor of selling our water. We can’t afford to make Dave Lopez supervisor. He works for special-interest groups. He does not work for us.
