The Bakersfield Blaze cruised for six innings behind a big offense and Ben Lively’s right arm, but Modesto made it interesting late in back-to-back innings, loading the bases late before the Blaze held on to beat the Nuts, 8-4, Friday night at John Thurman Field.
After the Nuts (9-20) scored two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings, Juan Ciraco flew out to center with loaded bases and two outs to end the threat.
The Nuts’ Sean Dwyer had a productive night with two runs and a double while Chris O’Dowd hit two doubles in the loss. Andrew Brown dropped to 1-3 after giving up eight runs on 13 hits in the first six innings to the Blaze (21-8).
Bakersfield’s Ben Lively improved to 6-0 striking out eight while allowing only two runs in 62/3 innings of work.
Bakersfield’s Kyle Waldrop nearly hit for the cycle, shy a triple. He hit a solo homer in the third. The second game of the three-game series starts at 7:05 tonight.
