Alfa Broderick: A Modesto walk in cruel shoes for a great cause

May 2, 2014

Having moved back to Modesto after almost 30 years living in Waterford, I was able to watch and walk along for a while in the “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” event downtown last Saturday. The walk/run was a lot of fun – a nice chance to see familiar faces, talk to old friends and enjoy watching men doing one of the hardest things we women go through in life: wearing high heels.

It was good to see members of our opposite gender try this “self-inflicted, not at all enjoyable punishment.” Maybe now they will be more sympathetic toward us. Like Councilman Tony Madrigal, one of the participants, said: “Now I’ll be more compassionate and understanding when I see a woman wearing high heels.”

Thank you, citizens of Modesto, for supporting this great cause! I understand over $40,000 was raised for the Haven Women’s Center. And this was the first time – Wow! Well done organizers, volunteers and, especially, participants (including my son William, poor soul, he was so bad at high heels that he won an “honorable mention” as one of the clumsiest!) for the success. Congratulations, everybody!
