Tioga Road in Yosemite opens today

May 1, 2014

Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park will open to vehicle traffic for the season at noon today. Tioga Road, bounded on both sides by Highway 120, is a popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada. Park officials said vault toilets are available in several locations along the road, but limited visitor services will be available over the next several weeks. Because of a light snowpack over the winter, Tioga Road was cleared of snow earlier this year. Snow and icy conditions may exist on hiking trails at higher elevations. Park officials urged visitors to be prepared for snowy conditions and possible treacherous stream crossings while hiking remote areas of the park. All campgrounds along Tioga Road remain closed. All commercial services, including the gas station, store and the village grill, also are closed. Park officials had no estimated opening dates for any of these facilities.
